Why did Robert E Lee decide to take his army to Gettysburg even though the Civil War was fought in the south?
Basically the whole civil war was mostly fought in the south until General Lee decided to take his army up north to Gettysburg. Why did he do that?
If anyone can give me any links to some good sources that would be awesome as well. i really need help on this. Thanks
It was a strategic gamble, advocated by Gen. Lee, to bring an end to the war. A victory in the north meant two things, the northern resistance to the war would bring about its end along with the foreign recognition of the South. On both counts, the gamble failed. It was the only card left that the south had, the resources of the north meant a sure victory by the Federals.
